SSN Office Near Me: Where to Get or Replace a Social Security Card

People search for an "SSN office" or "Social Security card office", but the Social Security Administration (SSA) does not run one. Cards are issued at the ordinary Social Security field office, with one exception: in four metros, card work goes to a dedicated Social Security Card Center. The locator below only shows offices that take card requests.

Use your location or a ZIP code. Field offices that do not take card requests are left out; Card Centers are flagged.

    SSN office questions

Is there a separate SSN office or Social Security card office?

No. Social Security number cards are issued by the regular Social Security Administration field offices. The only exception is four metros (New York City, Philadelphia, Orlando and the Twin Cities) where SSA runs dedicated Social Security Card Centers and the surrounding field offices do not take routine card requests.

Can I get a Social Security card the same day at the office?

No. Offices verify your documents and the card is printed centrally and mailed, usually within 14 business days. The office gives you a receipt showing the application date.

Do I need to visit an office at all for a replacement card?

Most adult U.S. citizens with a driver’s license or state ID can request a replacement card online in a my Social Security account and never visit. A first card, a child’s card, a name change or a non-citizen card still requires a visit with original documents.

What should I bring to the SSN office?

Original documents only: a current driver’s license, state ID or passport for identity; a birth certificate, passport or naturalization certificate for citizenship if SSA has not verified it; a current DHS document for non-citizens; and the marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order for a name change.

Do I need an appointment for a Social Security card?

SSA asks visitors to schedule before coming in and serves appointment holders first. Call the office’s direct number (on every office page) or 1-800-772-1213, or use the online appointment questionnaire.

Is the Social Security card free?

Yes. SSA never charges for a new, replacement or corrected card, and no private company can obtain one for you faster.
