Social Security Customer Service: Every Way to Reach the SSA

The Social Security Administration (SSA) answers through one national phone line, 1227 local offices with their own numbers, an online account that handles most routine requests, and mail or fax for documents. This page lists each channel, when it is open, what it is best for, and how to avoid the longest waits.

Shorter waits

  • Call later in the day, later in the week, later in the month. SSA's own guidance: Mondays, early mornings and the first week of the month (payment week) are the busiest.
  • Accept the callback when the 800 line offers it; you keep your place in the queue.
  • Call the local office for anything about an existing claim; the people who answer hold your file.
  • Check the automated line first. Benefit letters, replacement Medicare cards, Form SSA-1099, claim status and address changes need no representative.
  • Avoid the day after a holiday. Upcoming closures: Veterans Day (Wednesday, November 11, 2026); Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 26, 2026); Christmas Day (Friday, December 25, 2026). See is the office open today.

Before you call, have your Social Security number, date of birth and any SSA notice to hand; the phone number page lists exactly what representatives ask for, how the callback works and how to spot scam calls that imitate SSA. For a step-by-step route through the phone menu to a representative, see how to talk to a real person at Social Security.

Social Security customer service questions

What is the Social Security customer service number?

1-800-772-1213. Representatives are available Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 7 PM in your local time zone; the automated services run 24 hours a day. TTY users call 1-800-325-0778.

Does Social Security have customer service by email or chat?

Not for questions about your record. SSA does not discuss personal information by email, and there is no live chat. Use the phone, your online account, mail, or an office visit. SSA does publish a web form for general (non-personal) questions and feedback.

Is Social Security customer service open on weekends?

No. Phone representatives and offices work Monday to Friday. The automated phone line and my Social Security are available at weekends for letters, cards, status checks and address changes.

How do I get a callback instead of waiting on hold?

When the wait is long, the 1-800-772-1213 system offers a callback. Accept it and keep your phone free; the call comes from an 800-series number and a missed callback returns you to the start of the queue.

How do I complain about Social Security service?

Ask for the office manager at the field office, or use the feedback form on ssa.gov. For a claim stuck for many months, your U.S. representative or senator can open a congressional inquiry, which is free. Fraud or scam reports go to the SSA Office of the Inspector General at oig.ssa.gov.

Is there a different customer service line for SSI, SSDI or Medicare enrollment?

No. All Social Security programs use 1-800-772-1213 and the local offices. Medicare coverage and plan questions (not enrollment) go to 1-800-MEDICARE.
