Request a callback
When hold times on 1-800-772-1213 are long, the automated system may offer to call you back instead of keeping you on hold. If you accept, you keep your place in the queue and an agent calls the number you confirm. The option is announced by the system; it cannot be requested on demand.

- Your Social Security number and date of birth
- Any letter or notice from SSA you are calling about (the claim number is on it)
- Bank routing and account numbers if changing direct deposit
- A pen: agents give confirmation numbers for appointments and reports
SSA will never call to threaten arrest, demand payment by gift card or wire, or ask you to confirm your full Social Security number out of the blue. Hang up and report such calls at oig.ssa.gov.
